Many places are fit for different occasions but I believe that Stephanie's is a restaurant for any occasion from a business meeting to a birthday party. The atmosphere is warm and keeps the costumer in the mood for some good hearty food. The elevated table positions make the costumer feel more important, but could be a nuisance to older people. The only thing about the decor that striked me as negative were the ugly-green coloured chairs. I arrived earlier during dinner service so I guess I caught the staff off guard and that is why I had to seat myself. When the server did arrive however, he was very polite and showed much professionalism. He was there for me when i needed him and disappeared when I didn't. Fantastic job on his part. My dish arrived faster than i anticipated. Presentation was fair, and rather appealing to the eyes. The texture of the lamb as well as the taste made for a very nice experience during every bite. I was not a fan of the false advertising of scalloped potatoes thought. I would say i was served sliced and spiced potatoes which I enjoyed none the less. Overall a very nice plate. The dishes at Stephanie's are conservative in size so do not expect to be going home with leftovers. To end off the experience they have a vast selection of cakes and pies to satisfy every palate. Be warned however, they will bring every cake to the table. I would suggest to the staff, 1 slice of each on a tray to bring to the table instead so that the process of choosing doesn't take a lifetime. As you can see it isn't perfect but I believe Stephanie's is a swell place to bring your sweetheart for a date or your boss for a meeting. The price is reasonable and you get what you pay for. I read all the reviews prior to making reservations there. It seemed to me that the bad reviews were from folks that did not know what to expect and were surprised when they got there. The web page is quite clear of the menu and venue. I saw it and was not surprised when I got into the restaurant. We went for dinner before a show at the NAC. The server was at our table promptly and even asked if we were going to a show so that she could ensure our service and food would allow us plenty of time to get to the show. Very thoughtful and the service remained top notch throughout. Our appetizers were great. Our dinners were very good, the fish was fresh, the steak was done exactly as asked, the duck confit melted in your mouth except for the crispy skin...which was perfect. The sides were appropriate for the meal and also delicious but the 3 root vegetable mash that came with the Duck was extraordinary and deserves mention..Some had desserts which were declared as a real treat. We were in and out in time for our show but never hurried or short changed in our dinner. A very good experience overall. Pricey? Well, it was everything that was posted on the web page so no surprised at all. A very good spot with very good food and caring , professional servers. Just what you want for a good night out. This restaurant is such a contradiction. It has the potential to become the best restaurant in Ottawa (if not the country). All the elements are in place. Awesome, atmosphere, great staff (mostly), and good food. The only stick in the ointment is a single toxic personality in the guise of a server, who seems intent on destroying all of that and ensuring that you never come back. She's a bit older than the other servers (who are all excellent), but this is not about age. Irene's up the road seems like an older crowd of patrons and servers, but they are awesome...but I digress, this not about Irene's, I just wanted to show that the contradiction at Patty's boils down to one personality. Atelier offers an interesting experience, with a blind, 13-course tasting menu and food created in a laboratory, not a traditional kitchen. Some examples of our tastings included flash-frozen coconut, flash-boiled bison, food prepared on an "anti-griddle", wafers made of dehydrated honey, etc. Beyond that, I don't want to ruin the surprises, which really is what the experience is about. Our party was there for about 4.5 hours. All 4 of us did the blind tasting and 2 of us also had the wine pairing option. We were underwhelmed, despite going into the experience with great anticipation. The food was interesting but rarely tasty - only 4 or 5 of the 13 courses stand out as very tasty. The wine pairings were *very* poorly done, with only one truly successful pairing. For the price, we expected a far greater experience in terms of flavours and taste, although it was very interesting to experience familiar flavours in unusual preparations. The service was attentive, friendly, informed, if sometimes a bit over-eager to impress.
